What we have here is a rather special electric car from the house of the iconic British brand, Mini. Christened ‘Cooper SE’, it comes with the promise of sporty performance and Mini’s legendary go-kart-like driving manners. We drive around the heart of Mumbai to know what Mini’s first all-electric hatchback is all about.

What is it like to drive?

Mini has delegated a 32.6kWh battery pack (28.9kWh net capacity) to power its electric motor which puts out 184hp and 270Nm of torque, 8hp and 10Nm lesser than the internal combustion engine (ICE) Cooper S. The instantaneous responses from its electric motors in the real world, however, more than make up for its performance deficit on paper. There isn’t a multi-speed gearbox nor is there any turbo lag to tackle, and, as a result, when you want sudden bursts of acceleration, the Cooper SE zips ahead with all the motor’s ready torque transmitting to its front wheels. Adding drama to its fuss-free acceleration is a hint of torque steer and some tyre chirping under hard acceleration, before the ESP regulates wheelspin.

There is a Green+ mode to enhance the range, however, it turns off climate control, hence it isn’t a setting owners are likely to dial. The Sport mode makes the accelerator a tad sharper, compared to the Mid and Green modes, which feel reasonably quick on their own. The absence of a growling intake and a booming exhaust doesn’t captivate your aural senses like its ICE version, but the Cooper SE’s ability to whizz past traffic in complete silence is a very unique experience, lending the child-like Mini a mature, serene approach.

Offers two regeneration levels; both allow one-pedal driving.

And each time you decelerate, its battery converts some of the kinetic energy into electrical energy and recharges its battery. There are two levels of regenerative braking to speak of – retardation in the first level feels natural and it’ll shed speed gradually; the second level is very aggressive and the reduction in speed feels similar to strong braking. Both modes allow for one-pedal driving, wherein the car will even come to a complete halt without the need to depress its brake pedal.

The Cooper SE is derived from BMW’s UKL platform, which also underpins its ICE siblings. The electric version gains 145 kilograms compared to the 3-door Cooper S hatchback on account of its heavy T-shaped battery which is placed beneath the cabin. Its weight balance now shifts towards the rear, because its electric motor is actually lighter than the combustion engine. The placement of the battery further reduces the Mini’s center of gravity (CG) by 30mm; so this shift in weight balance and a lower CG have made it even more chuckable than the already go-kart-like ICE Cooper S.

The quick ratio steering is one of the most direct and communicative electric power steering units out there which allows you to precise control, and this car pivots around its axis with the finesse of a ballerina. The 17-inch wheels do a better job of bump absorption than the Cooper S JCW riding on low-profile 18-inchers, and it doesn’t feel as skittish as the JCW over mid-corner bumps either. That said, its short-travel suspension is properly stiff and the car will crash through broken roads and potholes. On account of its short wheelbase and stiff set-up, it’ll cross most speed breakers without scraping its underbelly, and what’s reassuring is the fact that Mini has raised the ride height by 18mm and the battery pack is protected by a solid base plate to save it from any untoward incident.

A 25kW DC fast charger tops up its battery from 0-80 percent in about an hour.

On a full charge, this 28.9kWh battery will lend a drive range of around 160-180km. And that’s actually a shame because this Mini is such a hoot to drive that you’ll yearn to drive it up to your favorite hilly sections, and explore great twisty roads. Using a 3-pin home charger, will slow charge the Mini’s battery in a snail-like 15 hours. Opting for 11kW wall box makes a huge difference to charging times, and in just two-and-a-half-hours you can replenish 80 percent of the battery, with the remaining 20 percent taking an hour more. It also supports 50kW DC fast charging which takes around 36 minutes to charge the battery from 0-80 percent.

What is it like outside?

There’s little to tell the Cooper SE apart from the internal combustion engine (ICE) version; the design is unmistakably Mini, and that’s no bad thing. The closed-off grille-area and the vertical air-inlets on the front bumper along with the green number plates give its identity away. Unique to the Cooper SE are yellow ‘S’ badges on the front grille area, fenders and boot; it also gets yellow outside mirror housings, a yellow lip for the alloys as well as an Electric logo on the boot. The funky-looking 17-inch alloys are inspired by a typical British three-pin wall socket. At the rear it retains the Union Jack tail-lamps and a roof spoiler, and the bumper is cleaned up in the absence of muffler tips.

Design for the 17-inch alloys are inspired by a typical British three-pin wall socket.

What is it like inside?

Like its exteriors, its interiors are all too familiar with high quality bits in funky designs and shapes. The front seats are fantastically sculpted, however, those with healthier body frames will find the seat bolstering a bit excessive. Its low seating goes well with its sporty persona, and visibility due to its upright windscreens and low window line, is excellent. The digital readout for the speedo and the level of charge reading are straightforward, and even the information imparted on the infotainment screen is limited, thus leaving geeky owners longing for more EV-related data. The rear seat is best left unused due to the lack of room for adults, however, folding it down liberates a cavernous 731-litre cargo area that’ll be handy during airport runs.

Funky designs and shapes add character to the Mini’s high quality cabin.

Should I buy one?

The 3-door Mini Cooper SE isn’t a car targeted towards the masses; with two doors, limited cabin space and limited battery range, it is quite impractical as a primary, family car and most will scoff at the idea of spending Rs 47.20 lakh ex-showroom on this electric hatchback even if it flaunts the iconic ‘Mini’ badge. But affluent individuals, with multiple car garages, looking for a compact electric runabout are likely to gravitate to the chic Cooper SE’s proposition.

You’ll yearn to drive it on your favourite twisty roads, but its 160-180km range is a bit restrictive.

This all electric Mini sports the right attitude, its oozing with individuality, and it retains the legendary go-kart like driving dynamics. In addition, it also boasts of green credentials and zero tailpipe emissions. With just 160-180km of driving range from its small battery, the Cooper SE will be limited to the city, but its beauty lies in its ability to infuse excitement into mundane commutes, leaving owners grinning ear-to-ear at the sight of every corner. It certainly isn’t perfect, but for the sheer thrills it delivers, and as a secondary car, the Mini Cooper SE deserves a serious consideration.

MG has previewed a new addition to its range ahead of an unveiling in the fourth quarter of 2022. The brand has given few details of the new car and a preview video leaves much to the imagination, but it will be all-electric, measure 4,300mm in length.

  • MG has gone in for a radical design change
  • Could be called the MG 4
  • Will have a 154hp motor capable of doing 0-100kph in 7.0secs

Based on those headline specifications, and clues given in the teaser video, the new model is set to be positioned as a value alternative to electric family hatchbacks such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Kia e-Niro.

MG design: a shift from the present

MG has given hints that the new arrival will feature radical design cues that make it stand out from the brand's current EV models – the MG ZS EV and MG 5 EV.

Visible in the teaser is a striking wraparound light bar, new wheel designs and wing mirrors, and heavily sculpted side panels that suggest a more design-led billing than has been employed by MG models since the brand was revived by Chinese company SAIC in 2007.

Its size places it neatly between the current MG 3 – which is set to be replaced in the coming months by an all-new electric hatchback – and the 5 estate, which makes it likely this new car will be called MG 4.

MG's future plans: youth-focused EVs

MG is also planning to introduce a new family of youth-focused EVs under the 'Cyber' banner, with the eventual production version of the Cyberster roadster serving as a flagship. It is possible that the 4 will form part of this roll-out.

It can also be expected to be broadly identical to the latest iteration of the 5 EV, with a front-mounted 154hp motor giving a 0-100kph time of around 7.0secs and a 57.7kWh battery that's good for some 250 miles (around 400km) of range.

MG's India plans

The carmaker is currently gearing up for the launch of the MG ZS EV facelift in the coming weeks, that will gain updated styling, more features and a larger battery pack. Bookings for the EV SUV have already been opened.

Mini has launched the all-electric Cooper SE in India, which is priced at Rs 47.20 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Being brought in as a CBU unit, the hatchback is available in a single, fully-loaded variant. Only 30 units were allotted for India in the first batch with Mini saying that all units have already been spoken for. Deliveries for the first batch will start from March, while bookings for the next batch will also commence around the same time.

  • Cooper SE available in four colour options
  • Gets an 8.8-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster and more
  • Powered by a 184hp electric motor

Mini Cooper SE: exterior

It’s important to note that India is getting the facelifted version of the Cooper SE. In terms of design, all traditional elements of the Cooper’s design, like the round LED headlamps, the Union Jack-themed LED tail-lamps and that familiar silhouette, have all been retained.

There are, however, some key differentiators like the larger blanked-out front grille, a slightly re-profiled front bumper, a redesigned rear bumper, the absence of exhaust pipes, and the bright yellow accents on the mirror caps and wheels. Speaking of which, the distinctive 17-inch wheel design on the Cooper SE is made to look like a British plug-socket. It also sits 15mm higher than the combustion-engined model to allow clearance for the battery pack.

The Cooper SE is available in four colours in India – White Silver, Midnight Black, Moonwalk Grey and British Racing Green.

Mini Cooper SE: interior and features

The SE’s overall dashboard design is similar to the standard Cooper hatchback, but a key highlight is the new 5.5-inch digital instrument cluster, with the Cooper SE being the first Mini to be equipped with one. The only other difference is a new toggle switch on the centre console for the multi-level brake-regeneration system, while the bright yellow accents have been carried over to the interior as well. Mini claims the interior and boot space remain largely unaffected by the new powertrain.

In terms of features, the Cooper SE gets an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay compatibility, sports seats, a Harman Kardon audio system, panoramic glass roof, Nappa leather steering wheel and TPMS.

Mini Cooper SE: powertrain, battery and charging

Powering the Cooper SE is an electric motor that produces 184hp and 270Nm of torque, drawing power from a 32.6kWh battery that’s mounted beneath the passenger seat in a T-shape. Power is sent to the front wheels only, resulting in a 0-100kph sprint in 7.3 seconds and a top-speed of 150kph. The Cooper SE also gets four drive modes – Mid, Sport, Green and Green+.

Mini says that the Cooper SE has been optimised to strike a balance between an acceptable city driving range and desired levels of performance, resulting in a WLTP-certified range of up to 270km. The Cooper SE is capable of fast-charging from 0-80 percent in 36 minutes via a 50kW charge point, while a 11kW wall box (provided as standard) can charge it from 0-80 percent in 150 minutes – 210 minutes for a full charge.

Mini is providing a standard warranty of two years with unlimited kilometers on the Cooper SE.

Mini Cooper SE: competition check

As of now, there is no direct rival to the Mini Cooper SE in India in terms of body style or segment. At Rs 47.20 lakh, the Mini Cooper SE sits right in the middle of all other EV's sold in India currently. The Mini EV is Rs 52.30 lakh cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz EQC, which is the next most affordable luxury EV in India at Rs 99.50 lakh. On the other end of the spectrum, however, the Cooper SE is Rs 22.02 lakh more expensive than the MG ZS EV. Other luxury EVs on sale in India include the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tronBMW iX, Audi e-tron GT and the Porsche Taycan.

Mini Cooper SE India launch: What do we know so far

Only 30 units have been allotted for India in the first batch with Mini saying that all units have been booked. Deliveries of the Cooper SE will begin from April. The Cooper SE, globally introduced in 2019, will come to India as a CBU in a single, fully loaded variant.

For the uninitiated, the Cooper SE is based on the Cooper 3-door hatchback, and, while both cars look near identical, the SE swaps the internal combustion engine for an electric motor and a battery.

Mini Cooper SE India launch: What's different

All traditional elements of the Cooper’s design, like the round LED headlamps, the Union Jack-themed LED tail-lamps and, of course, that familiar silhouette, have all been retained.

There are, however, some key differentiators like the blanked-out front grille with a new ‘E’ badge, a slightly reprofiled front bumper, a redesigned rear bumper that does not need to house exhaust pipes, and the yellow accents on the door mirror caps and wheels. Mini Cooper SE India launch: powertrain and charging

The Cooper SE is powered by an electric motor that produces 184hp and 270Nm of torque, drawing juice from a 32.6kWh battery-mounted beneath the passenger seat in a T-shape. Power is sent to the front wheels only, resulting in a 0-100kph sprint in 7.3 seconds and a top-speed of 150kph. The Cooper SE also gets four drive modes – Mid, Sport, Green and Green+ – and the powertrain, incidentally, is shared with the BMW i3 hatchback.

The Cooper SE has been optimised to find a balance between an acceptable city driving range and desired levels of performance, which results in a WLTP-certified range of 235-270km. Mini says the Cooper SE is capable of fast-charging from 0-80 percent in 35 minutes via a 50kW charge point, while a 11kW wall box can charge it from 0-80 percent in 150 minutes – or 210 minutes on a full charge.

Mini Cooper SE: rivals in India

As things stand, the Cooper SE will not have any direct rival in India as the likes of the Mercedes EQCJaguar I-Pace, Audi e-tron and BMW iX are significantly larger and pricier. It will, however, could be the most affordable luxury EV in India when launched.

MG is set to unveil a new high-riding electric hatchback in the coming months with the model expected to go on sale in overseas sometime in 2023, our sister publication Autocar UK cited sources at parent company SAIC as saying.

Exposed in prototype form in a series of photos uploaded to Chinese social media channels, the new hatchback is planned to join the company’s range of EVs on sale such as the facelifted ZS EV, 5 EV and the new MG Marvel-R.

  • Production EV likely to debut by end-2022
  • Could replace the MG 3 in global markets

New MG EV: What do we know

Although the project is shrouded in secrecy, according to Autocar UK, MG is planning to preview the new model as a concept at the Beijing motor show in April before unveiling the definitive production model during the second half of the year.

The production model is expected to hit global markets in 2023.

Among the styling details identifying the prototype as an MG is the middle section of the hatchback’s distinctive front bumper, which is shaped similar to that of the Chinese-owned carmaker’s recent Cyberster roadster concept.

The new model also features a prominent shoulder line reminiscent of that seen on the ZS. Other details are obscured by camouflage wrap covering the bodywork, though images from underneath show the battery and reveal the early testing mule uses an independent rear suspension.

The new MG is described as being shorter than the ZS, which extends to 4,314mm in length.

Could replace the MG 3 in global markets

Chinese media reports suggest the new hatchback could replace the second-generation MG 3, which has been in production at MG’s Nanjing plant in China since 2011, offering the choice of both electric and combustion drivetrains.

MG’s EV plans for India

In the Indian market, MG launched its first electric offering, the ZS EV, in early 2020 with the SUV receiving an update early last year. The carmaker is expected to bring the ZS EV facelift to India sometime this month. The facelifted EV will pack in a larger battery pack and improved range over the outgoing model.

Late last year, MG also confirmed that it was working on a second EV – a crossover – for the local market, to sit below the ZS. It said this new model will sit within the range of Rs 10 lakh-15 lakh, be based on a global platform, will be locally assembled and be “specially tailored for India.”

Should MG consider bringing this new all-electric model to the Indian market following it's global debut? Let us know in the comments below.

Mercedes-AMG A 45 S; it has an extremely strong power to weight ratio

No single metric describes the performance potential of a car better than its power to weight ratio. This is something that becomes apparent as soon as you look at the various facets that affect performance. While many of us pay attention to the power figure in isolation, which sort of makes sense, what we forget is that the weight it has to push around is equally important.

This brings us nicely to AMG’s A 45 S, a car whose power to weight ratio explains so much. With 421hp and a kerb weight of 1,625kg, the A 45 S has an extremely healthy power to weight ratio of 260hp per ton. While this may not sound like a lot in isolation, let’s put this into perspective and compare it to something we know is quick; something like a... err... Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. With 450hp and 1,605kg, the four wheel drive 992 has a power to weight ratio of 280hp per ton. This, as you can tell, isn’t far removed from that of the A 45 S. The standard rear wheel drive 911 Carrera, however, has just 244hp per ton. Hmm. Admit it, you are looking at AMG’s A 45 S with greater respect now.

Mercedes-AMG A 45 S: what’s it like on everyday roads?

Now, having driven this car at the NATRAX high speed bowl in Indore and having seen 278kph come up on the speedometer effortlessly, I thought I knew what to expect out in the real world. But boy oh boy, was I wrong. Wide open spaces, such as those at Natrax, have a habit of masking real pace, and this is rudely brought home by the rampaging A 45 S, as it dispatches block upon block of urban sprawl.

Mercedes AMG A45 S pan

Truth be told, nothing quite prepares you for just how quick the A 45 S feels in a familiar setting. This is made abundantly clear during an early morning drive, where the A 45 S’s rabid pace opens my eyes like a double shot of espresso. You feel the potency almost immediately. That tug the moment the boost comes in, the ride up the powerband as power and torque continue to build and then, what seals it is, the top-end, where instead of flattening out as many turbos do, this one keeps pulling and pulling. This engine is so much better than the one in the earlier CLA 45. While that one pushed out power any and everywhere it could, this one’s power delivery is more nuanced, more curated. And this is the first four-cylinder AMG engine assembled by hand, using its one-man one-engine philosophy that worked so well for it.

In our conditions and on our regular 91 octane fuel, the A 45 S, with launch control activated, managed to do a 0-100kph time of 4.17 seconds, with 200kph coming up in 15 seconds dead. And that’s seriously quick. Junior performance, this certainly isn’t.

Mercedes AMG A45 S side
Ground clearance is low, you have to take care.

The A 45 S, however, also struggles in our conditions. While speed-breakers, even large ones, can be crossed successfully if you are slow, deliberate and approach them at an angle, riding carelessly over them, especially with a few passengers, will bring the bottom of the car in contact with the speed hump.  With its low profile tyres, hard springs and stiff engine mounts, the A 45 S also rides hard. This is especially true at low city speeds, where despite the dampers softening the ride in ‘Comfort’, the AMG still tosses you around a fair bit and, at times, crashes over large sharp-edged bumps. This clearly isn’t a car you can drive flat out over bad patches, and road noise especially over coarse surfaces can be excessive too. This clearly is a car where you have to pick and choose, wisely, where to open the taps and where to back off. And at low speed, the twin clutch gearbox also drags and lurches at times.

Mercedes-AMG A 45 S: what’s it like in its natural environment?

Once up to speed and on faster flowing roads outside the city, the A 45 S is much more adept at taking bumps. It isn’t comfortable per say, but, you don’t get tossed around either. What you do get is a fair amount of road noise, and on coarse surfaces, this gets amplified even more.

Where the A 45 S really comes into its own is around corners. Yes, as good as the engine and performance are, it is the manner in which the A 45 S assaults corners that truly elevates this car above the ordinary.

Mercedes AMG A45 S rear

To begin with, the steering is extremely accurate and has a fair amount of feel. So, all you need to do to place the car accurately in a corner, is flick the wheel. Then, unlike some four-wheel drive performance cars that are stodgy and two dimensional, this one is playful and agile. And as you go harder, what makes it nicer still is that AMG, on application of throttle, has even managed to give it a slight rear-bias. So you tuck into corners beautifully and are even encouraged to use more and more throttle. You do have to manage the weight transfer and pay attention to the attitude of the car as it enters corners, but this only makes it more engaging and more involving.

This allows you to rag the A 45 S, along with plenty of confidence, set it up for a corner, and then pick up the throttle nice and early as you exit using all the grip and seamless superbike like top-end of the engine. It feels fluid and loose and incredibly fun; a big change from the earlier CLA 45. Even the twin-clutch gearbox responds very promptly at high speeds and helps deliver a double shot of driving nirvana as you rip through the gears. What a car.

Mercedes AMG A45 S exhaust
Sporty rear bumper and quad exhausts tell you this is a serious piece of kit.

Using the drift mode in wide open spaces is also loads of fun. The front axle isn’t disconnected as on other predominantly rear driven AMG cars, but 50 percent of torque can be sent to the rear and then the rear diff can pinch the inside wheel with the brakes and push drive to the outside wheel, which allows for some big slides. They don’t feel as natural as those on the rear wheel drive car, but once you get the hang of it, it is loads of fun.

What also gives you a layer of adjustability is AMG Dynamics; it alters stuff like traction control, ESP and the differentials to deliver a tailor-made driving experience all the way from basic to pro.

Mercedes-AMG A 45 S: what does it come equipped with?

For what you pay for the car, the A 45 S’s cabin feels a bit too familiar. The basic layout of the dash is similar to the A-Sedan, the look and feel is almost identical to the A35 and for the premium you pay over that car, you don’t get all that much more. Quality levels, however, are excellent, the sport seats help make it look sportier and what makes you forgive and forget the humble origins is that the seats are both very supportive and comfortable, even over long drives. What works in its favour is that it is a fairly practical and large hatch.

Cabin similar to A-Sedan and A35 AMG in India.

There is a fair amount of space in the rear, luggage space is decent, and while the rear seats are placed a bit low and there isn’t as much legroom as on the sedan, the semi-practical nature of this car compared to something overtly sporty is what owners will appreciate. AMG has even equipped it well. Standard features include dual 10.25-inch screens with MBUX infotainment system and AMG performance displays, a Burmester hi-fi audio system, and a decently sized sunroof. Optional equipment gets you ‘advanced’ sports seats with heating, massage and memory functions, a head-up display, a chrome exterior package, and driver assist systems like a 360-degree camera, lane keep assist and blind spot warning.

Not the most spacious or comfy rear seat, but it is a practical hatch.

Mercedes-AMG A 45 S: should you buy one?

The Mercedes-AMG A 45 S is one of the most fun driver’s cars around. Blessed with rabid pace, adjustable fun-handling and the ability to turn a mundane drive into an epic one, the A 45 S is a landmark achievement. Capable of delivering the goods and more, even at the Rs 79.5 lakh (ex-showroom) price, it takes the hot hatch and elevates it to an all-new level. Sure, the cabin feels ordinary at this price, the low ground clearance is far from ideal in our conditions, ride quality isn’t comfortable, there’s a fair amount of road noise and it is easily the most expensive hatch on sale in India. Still, if you are looking for a special driving experience, at a not-so-stratospheric price, and aren’t so concerned that this car is based on a relatively humble hatchback, the A 45 S is the car for you. It’s different and it isn’t perfect, but it works really, really well.

Toyota has revived the GRMN moniker ]]>

Just 500 examples will be built, all destined for sale in Japan, Toyota's home country, later this year via a 'reservation lottery'. Pricing too will be at a premium over the standard hot hatchback.

Toyota GRMN Yaris: what’s changed over the standard GR Yaris?

As suggested by its GRMN badge – 'Gazoo Racing, tuned by the Meister of the Nürburgring' – the new special edition has been developed by Toyota's GR performance division using learnings from motorsport.

The headline upgrades are a stiffer body (courtesy of 546 new spot welds and 12m of extra structural adhesive), a 20kg weight loss (the rear seats make way for a chunky cross-brace), a 10mm increase in width for improved aerodynamics, and a 10mm drop in ride height for a lower centre of gravity.

The GRMN Yaris also receives a mechanical limited-slip differential – the regular GR Yaris has a Torsen unit – and a new gearbox with close-ratio first to fourth gears to "make efficient use of the engine power band". The company has yet to confirm the impact this has had on the GR Yaris' 5.5sec 0-100kph time.

The 1.6-litre three-pot turbo engine, too, gets some enhancements over the JDM-spec GR Yaris. Power remains unchanged, at 272hp, though torque is up 20Nm, to 390Nm.

Toyota says the hot hatch "has evolved into a car that can be driven faster and with more peace of mind, with improved braking force, grip, cornering and following performance based on feedback from professional drivers".

The 500 buyers will be offered the choice of two optional upgrade packages on top of the GRMN modifications.

The Circuit package brings bespoke 18-inch BBS wheels, adjustable Bilstein shocks, a carbon-fibre rear spoiler and a subtle body kit, while the Rally package gets a bespoke GR suspension upgrade, a protective undertray and a roll bar.

The GRMN Yaris is marked out from the standard car most obviously by its exposed carbon-fibre bonnet and roof panel, and the Recaro bucket seats.

Alongside the GRMN Yaris, Toyota has launched a new personalisation programme that aims to provide customers with cars “that evolve quickly and can be tailored to individuals” like a race car. Driving data from each car can be used by engineers to usher in bespoke software tweaks and hardware settings to optimise performance for its driver.

Toyota’s plans for India

Shifting focus to the Indian market, Toyota has yet to officially launch any of its models from the GR performance brand in the country. The carmaker recently launched the facelifted Camry Hybrid in the country, with the next launch set to be the Hilux pick-up on January 20.

The carmaker is also expected to roll out facelifted versions of the Glanza and Urban Cruiser in the coming months.

New images leaked online give a good look at what appears to be the next-generation Mini 3-door Hatch.

While the combustion-engined version of the next Mini hatchback – due internationally by second half of 2022 as 2023 model – will be built in Oxford, the electric version is set to be made by BMW's Chinese joint venture partner Great Wall Motors.

New Mini 3-door hatchback: leaked images and exterior design

The shots, which have been clicked at a private Chinese testing facility, first appeared in the Chinese media, before being widely circulated on social media.

According to the images, a number of prototypes appear to be undergoing testing, most in camouflage. However, one has been spotted without its wrap, giving us our first uninhibited look at how Mini will reinvent its flagship model for its fourth generation.

The leaked images come shortly after Mini released official pictures of a prototype for the next-generation Mini, which hinted at a subtle styling evolution for the Fiat 500 rival.

But it's clear that underneath the camouflage, more radical design tweaks are on the cards, particularly at the rear, where striking angular light clusters replace the round ones on today's car, and are linked by a new piece of black trim that spans the width of the bootlid.

The front, too, is clearly distinguished from the current Mini range, but retains the wide bar across its large grille and characteristic circular headlights.

What isn't immediately clear is whether Mini has taken steps to 'shrink' the fourth-generation hatch, which has been reported to be a priority for a long time.

These shots only show the exterior from select angles, but, as with the earlier official images, the indication is that the next generation will feature largely familiar proportions.

New Mini 3-door hatchback: interior details

The leak also gives clues about the Mini's new-era interior design ethos. True to form, the Mini hatchback features a large, round central display, although a head-up display looks to have taken the place of the conventional gauge cluster above the steering wheel, which adopts a new two-spoke design.

Mini India plans

Mini will introduce the Mini Cooper SE all-electric hatchback in the coming months. As per our dealer sources, the EV hatchback will be brought in a single fully-loaded trim and only 30 units have been allocated for the first batch. This new model also falls under BMW’s (Mini’s parent company) plans to introduce three new EVs in India in the next few months. The other models are the BMW iX SUV which will launch on December 13, and the i4 EV sedan.

Kwid-based Dacia Spring EV gets 1-star Euro NCAP rating

The Dacia Spring EV was awarded a one star rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP crash tests. The electric city car was part of a number of models to be tested by the agency which also included the Zoe EV from Dacia's parent company Renault which received a zero star rating.

The Spring EV, Europe's cheapest full-sized electric car, was awarded a one-star verdict on the basis that "its performance in crash tests is downright problematic". The electric city car is closely related to the Chinese-market Renault City K-ZE EV and combustion-engined Renault Kwid – which landed a one-star Global NCAP safety rating in 2016.

Euro NCAP said testing highlighted "a high risk of life-threatening injuries for driver chest and rear passenger head in frontal crash tests and marginal chest protection in side impact.”

Dacia Spring EV: the rating explained

Despite being fitted with the head-protecting airbag from the Zoe, the Spring achieved only a 49 percent score for adult occupant protection, while a risk to rear-seat passengers resulted in a 56 percent child occupant rating.

The Spring offered poor protection to the driver's chest and pelvis in the front mobile deformable barrier impact test and poor head protection to rear occupants during the full width barrier test. Far side impact test also showed poor protection to the occupants, while rear occupant whiplash neck protection was rated poor in case of a rear impact.

For child occupants, Euro NCAP recorded marginal neck protection to the 10-year-old dummy and marginal head protection to the six-year-old dummy in the event of a frontal offset impact. The car also lost points for not having the ISOFIX anchorages clearly marked. The Spring was also missing "key active safety systems".

“This is anything but a safe family car, despite being marketed as a good option for families," said Matthew Avery, Euro NCAP board member on the performance. “Dacia argues that drivers don’t need collision-avoidance technology. We would argue that’s not right, because nobody wants to have a crash; nobody wants to feel what it’s like to be smacked in the face by an airbag, really. So active safety is just as important as passive safety.”

He suggested that the Spring’s shortcomings in the active safety segment (that includes the lack of advanced driver aids) isn't necessarily compensated for by a strong active safety performance. It has “very poor active and passive safety,” he said.

Commenting on the Spring’s one-star rating, Dacia said, “[The] Spring is a safe new A-segment car. It is homologated, complies with European safety regulations and goes even beyond." Automatic emergency braking and fireman access are not mandatory in European regulations, Dacia noted.

The manufacturer added, “[The] Spring proposes a full list of safety features providing better protection than most of the cars on the roads of Europe today (including those of upper segments). However, the contradiction remains between the light weight/small size of the car (which makes them more efficient and more accessible) and the resistance in terms of crash; especially with Euro NCAP protocols getting more and more stringent every two years, in particular for small city cars.”

Renault Zoe: third-ever vehicle to get zero-star Euro NCAP

The Renault Zoe, one of Europe's most popular electric cars, was given a zero-star safety rating, becoming just the third car in Euro NCAP's history to record a zero-star rating.

The Zoe previously held a five-star Euro NCAP rating, but was entered into the tests following a substantial facelift last year, which not just ushered in a bigger battery and extra power, but also – the safety organisation notes – a new seat-mounted side airbag that protects just the occupant's thorax, rather than the head and thorax as it did previously.

This change represents "a degradation in occupant protection", according to Euro NCAP, which reported that in the side-pole-impact test, the "driver's head directly impacted the intruding pole and head injury values indicated poor protection of this part of the body."

The supermini's performance in the frontal offset crash test was also "poor", with Euro NCAP citing weak protection for the driver's chest area and the necks of children in the back seats specifically.

The Zoe is also said to lack active safety technology "commonly fitted as standard", such as lane-departure warning and standard-fit automatic emergency braking (AEB). Therefore, it achieved a rating of just 14 percent in the Safety Assist category, around 61 percent lower than the 2021 average.

Overall, the Zoe achieved a 43 percent adult occupant safety rating (the lowest for 11 years), a 52 percent child occupant rating and a 41 percent rating in the Vulnerable Road Users category.

Avery, told our sister publication Autocar UK, “Every few years, Euro NCAP raises the bar by introducing new tests which either exploit new technologies or lift the hurdle to make manufacturers do better. If everyone is five-star, we need to lift the barrier."

As a result of these alterations, he explained, “When we first tested the Zoe, it did reasonably well and had all the elements you needed back then to get a reasonable score. But if you've still got the same design 10 years later, you aren't going to score as well.”
